PAP Smears
A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a simple and effective screening procedure used to detect abnormal cervical cells that may indicate infections, precancerous changes, or cervical cancer. The test is recommended for women starting at age 21 and should be repeated every three years, or as advised by a healthcare provider. For women over 30, a Pap smear is often combined with an HPV (human papillomavirus) test, as HPV is a major risk factor for cervical cancer. Early detection through regular Pap smears allows doctors to treat any abnormalities before they develop into serious conditions.
During the procedure, a healthcare provider gently collects a sample of cervical cells using a soft brush or spatula. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The test is usually painless, though some women may experience mild discomfort or slight spotting afterward. If abnormal cells are found, further testing, such as a colposcopy or biopsy, may be required to determine the next steps. Regular Pap smears play a crucial role in preventive healthcare, significantly reducing the risk of cervical cancer and ensuring long-term reproductive health.
